Bernard DeVoto (1897–1955) was a famous writer, editor, critic, and conservationist during the early 20th century. In 1933 DeVoto recieved a fan letter from a young woman named Katharine Sterne. His reply sparked an 11 year correspondence, with the two exchanging over 800 letters until Sterne's death in 1944.
