Alice Merrill Horne papers

 Collection
Identifier: MS 0521

Scope and Contents

The Alice Merrill Horne papers (1938-1979) consist of two letters and an enclosure addressed to Judge Tillman B. Johnson that were found in the Shepherd Scrapbook of Utah's Third Legislature. The first letter, dated 20 June 1938, specifically concerns Horne's indignation at the University of Utah's failure to recognize properly the Third Legislature for its role in voting $300,000 for construction of buildings for the campus. An enclosure to this letter is included regarding the Enabling Act which gave Utah "lands to the extent of two townships...for the establishment of the University of Utah." The second letter, dated 5 June 1942, is a thank you letter to Judge Johnson and comments on the judge's changing opinion of women's rights. Also included in this collection is a retrospective exhibition program of the painter Lee Greene Richards by Horne. Also included in the collection is a letter written by Virginia L. Horne (Alice Merrill Horne's daughter) to Mr. Florian Wineriter.
