Organizational History

The Kearns Building was constructed by Senator Thomas Kearns, a Utah mining magnate, who made his fortune in silver and lead from the Silver King Mine in Park City. The building, completed in 1911, was described as emulating the style of Louis H. Sullivan. It was designed by the architectural firm of Parkinson Bergstrom, also responsible for designing the Hotel Utah. It is constructed of reinforced concrete with a white terra cotta facade featuring fine decorative details. The building's foyer is done in soft tan limestone. Its ceiling is vaulted and is completed with carved stone figures, gold leaf mosaic, and engaged Tuscan columns. When completed, the building incorporated the innovations and conveniences of the new century. It was the preeminent business address in Salt Lake City. In 1983-1984 the building underwent restoration and refurbishment and in February 1984, the Heritage Foundation sponsored tours of the building.
