Steensma was an officer in the Naval Reserve from 1948 to 1983 and retired with the rank of Captain. He taught at the University of South Dakota, Augustana College. From 1966 to 2001, he taught at the University of Utah. He is the author of several books and articles, including Wallace Stegner's Salt Lake City.
