Biographical Note

Theodore (Ted) Stanley was born February 4th, 1940 to to Theodore and Ellen Stanley in Brooklyn, New York. He graduated from Columbia College in 1961 with a triple AB degree in zoology, chemistry, and music. He went on to recieve a medical degree from Columbia.

Theodore Stanley spent the first part of his career in residency in Cleveland with Willem J. Kolff, a pioneer in the artificial organ field. When Kolff moved to Utah, Ted followed and remained there for the rest of his career. While at the University of Utah, he was a significant contributor to the University's artificial organ program, including development of the artificial heart. In later years, his main areas of research included the development of the fentanyl series, transcutaneous cranial electrical stimulation, and anesthetic delivery methods. Later in his career, he maintained a passion for educating both medical students and post-doctorate students about the field of anesthesia.

Theodore Stanley died July 13th, 2017.

Abstract

The Theodore H. Stanley papers (1960s-2000) consist of the collected works and papers of esteemed anesthesiologist Theodore H. Stanley, one of the team members who worked on the first total artificial heart replacement developed at the University of Utah. The collection includes research, published articles, correspondence, and models/diagrams of Dr. Stanley's work.
