Scope and Contents

The John W. Smith papers (1906-1957) consist of materials related to John W. Smith and Joseph V. Smith. John W. Smith served as superintendent of schools in Salt Lake County, Utah. Joseph V. Smith worked for New York Life Insurance Company for 50 years. The first series consists primarily of correspondence related to the National Society, Sons of Pioneer centennial trek and the Emeritus Club of the University of Utah. Also included is a booklet entitled The Story of John W. Smith: Pioneer of Rural School Consolidated Utah published by Printers, Inc. in May 1952. The second series consists primarily of booklets, certificates, correspondence, and speeches related to Smith's career in the insurance industry. The correspondence relates to Smith's anniversaries at New York Life Insurance Company.

Biographical / Historical

John William Smith was born in Draper, Utah on November 27, 1867 to Lauritz Nicolaisen Smith and Johanne Kirstine Jensen. Smith graduated from the University of Desert in 1887. He served as superintendent for schools in Salt Lake County, Utah. He was also president of the Emeritus Club of the University of Utah. He was a member of the National Society, Sons of Utah Pioneers and completed the Centennial trek in 1947. He was married to Elida Caroline Hanson; the couple had at least four children. Smith passed away in Tremonton, Utah on December 10, 1954.

Joseph V. Smith was born in Utah on March 8, 1867. Prior to his career in the insurance industry, Smith worked at Union Pacific and Salt Lake Brewing Company. He was one of the original members of the Salt Lake Association of Life Underwriters. His career at New York Life Insurance Company started in February 1905. He worked there for at least 50 years.
