Masaru "Mas" Hamada (1917-2003) and Kiyoko "Kay" Murakami Hamada (1918-2005) were second generation, or Nissei, Japanese Americans born and raised in Ogden, Utah who married in 1944. Mas Hamada was a veteran of the United States Army, serving in the 442nd Regimental Combat Team during World War II; afterwards, he worked as a civil engineer for the Chicago Bridge and Iron Company, where he worked as company representative in Japan. Originally known as the Ogden Union Church and then as the Ogden Japanese Christian Church, the Ogden Christian Church was founded in 1927 to serve the needs of the Japanese immigrants in the Ogden area. In addition to religious services, the church offered various social supports, programs, and events.
