Historical Note

Originally known as the Ogden Union Church, the Ogden Christian Church was founded in 1927 to serve the needs of the Japanese immigrants in the Ogden area. In addition to providing religious services, the church provided Japanese language classes for the children of Issei (first generation immigrants) and offered numerous social events. The church had its origins in a group of Christian immigrants from Japan who formed a fellowship around their shared religion upon their immigration in the 1900s. By the 1920s, the group had grown large enough to found a church, and the congregation purchased a building located at 580 23rd Street, Ogden, Utah. The building had formerly housed had been built in 1912 by the German Evangelical Synod of North America and included handmade stained-glass windows that had been shipped to Ogden from Germany in 1921.

In 1965, congregants changed the church’s name to the Ogden Japanese Christian Church. As the demographics of the congregants changed to include more Nisei (second generation) and Sansei (third generation) Japanese Americans, the church increasingly shifted to offer services in English. In 2015, the congregation voted to change the name to the Ogden Christian Church to reflect their increasing diversity. In 2020, in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the church moved to a virtual hybrid model to ensure that its congregation would still have access to worship and community, a model that the church retained in order to continue its original goal of serving the needs of its community.
