Scope and Contents

The William and Mary Nishisaki Yoden photograph collection consists of two portraits: of Major William U. Yoden of Omaha and Sanasaku "Sam" Nishisaki. The portraits are copy prints, created circa 2005, of colorized portraits originally taken circa 1940-1945. The captions were provided by the donor. The prints were donated to the Marriott Library Special Collections and Archives in relation to an exhibit on Japanese American veterans.

Biographical / Historical

William Utaka "Bill" Yoden was born on June 21, 1916 in St. Louis, Missouiri to Sato Yoshida and Shinkichiro Yoden. He grew up in the area and attended the University of Wichita. After graduating, he worked as a traveling salesman, where he met Mary Haruko Nishisaki. Mary Haruko Nishisaki was born on February 4, 1920, in Pocatello, Idaho. Mary Nishisaki and Bill Yoden married on February 16, 1943; together, they had three daughters. When the United States entered World War II, Bill Yoden volunteered and completed Officer Candidate School. He served in the Phillipines and was stationed with the occupation forcdes in Korea. He attained the rank of Major. Yoden served for 29 years as battalion commander of the Eastern Idaho Army Reserve. The Yoden family lived in Blackfoot, Idaho. Mary and Bill were members of the Japanese American Citizens League (JACL). Bill Yoden died on September 29, 1989. Mary Yoden died on January 14, 2011.

Abstract

William Utaka "Bill" Yoden (1916-1989) was a Japanese-American veteran of World War II. He and his wife, Mary Nishisaki Yoden (1920-2011) lived with their family in Blackfoot, Idaho. This collection contains copy print portraits: of Bill Yoden in the Army and of a relative of Mary Nishisaki Yoden.
