Scope and Contents

The David M. Walden photograph collection contains photographs collected by David M. Walden in the course of his research. Material consists primarily of copy prints and copy negatives with no indication where the originals are held. Many of the photographs and negatives were reproduced from original plates by Heritage Prints, proprietor Rell G. Francis, in the late 1980s. The collection includes portraits of figures from Utah's medical history, including: Dr. Karl Hawkins, Sr., chiropractor; Samirta Bassett Wood, midwife; Sarah Adelia Wright Wing, midwife; Polly Block, midwife from American Fork, Utah; Nancy Ballinger Hall; Dr. Frederick Dunn. The collection contains copies of images of Utah Valley Hospital in Provo, Utah, its facilities, administrators, and employees, and photocopies of newspaper articles about he hospital. Additional organizations depicted include: Springville Instacare IHC and Mountain View Professional Plaza.

The collection also contains 46 black and white contact sheets, negatives, and prints and color photographs of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints on Guam and Hawaii, including images of members, buildings, and missionaries. These images date primarily from 1977-1979 and are well identified with notes on the backs of the photographs and on photocopies annotated by Walden.

Biographical Note

David Michael Walden (1947-2010) was born on November 6, 1947, to Blake and Charlotte Brown Walden in Omaha, Nebraska. Walden studied Zoology and Bacteriology at Iowa State University, graduating with a B.S. in 1969. After his college graduation, Walden enlisted in the United States Navy as a Hospital Corpsman. He was stationed at Bremerton Naval Hospital and at the Naval Hospital in Guam. After his discharge, Walden remained in Guam to teach while attending the University of Guam, where he received a M.A. in Behavioral Science. A member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, Walden eventually moved to Utah, where he studied for a second Masters at Brigham Young University. Walden taught history at Salt Lake Community College and wrote, edited, and coauthored numerous histories of individuals, organizations, and businesses. With W. Dee Halverson, Walden coauthored the 1997 study St. Mark’s Hospital, 1872-1997: A 125 Year Legacy of Quality Health Care in Utah. David Walden died on June 23, 2010, in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Abstract

David M. Walden (1947-2010) was a historian and educator who authored, edited, and cowrote numerous individual and organizational histories. This collection contains material gathered by Walden during research into the medical history of Utah, as well as photographs documenting Walden's time living in Guam in the 1970s during and after his service in the United States Navy.
