Scope and Contents
The American West Center Research Projects photograph collection contains 24 black-and-white negatives of images of Zuni pottery shards used in research on Zuni, New Mexico conducted by the American West Center. According to an enclosed letter from Susan M. Collins, the sherds were used as evidence in a Zuni Land Claim case, which took place between 1979 and 1991.

Historical Note
The American West Center was founded in 1964 by A. R. Mortensen and C. Gregory Crampton, two University of Utah history professors. The mission of the Center was to research and document the history and culture of the American West, a goal that was unique at the time. The Center collects and creates primary sources related to the history of the American West, produces curriculum support material about Utah's history and communities, and supports interdisciplinary scholarship on the region. Since its founding, faculty and graduate student researchers affiliated with the Center have taken over 7,000 oral histories, including an unparalleled 2,000 Native American interviews.
