Scope and Contents

The Alice Estelle Manning Whipple photograph collection consists of 1 box containing 129 black-and-white photographs of individuals and groups from the Manning family. The images were removed from 1 white binder compiled by Whipple to document her family genealogy. The images include 5 cartes de visite, 24 cabinet cards, 1 tintype, 56 photographs and 50 copy prints. The images primarily depict Hiram Clay Manning, Maria Elizabeth Willis Manning, and their 12 children in formal group and individual portraits, as well as informal snapshot photographs; it also contains images of Marie's parents Fanny M. Burr and Horatio J. Willis and other members of her family. The collection also contains images of Alice Whipple's Manning aunts and uncles at work, school, and play, including: George Washington Manning on the Salt Lake Trolley Car Barns Board; Flora Ellen and Nellie Mae Manning boating, hiking, and swimming at Saltair; Earl Elmer and his wife Cornelia at the University of Utah; and Alpha Horatio Manning serving in the United States military. The individuals in the photographs are well identified. The collection dates from approximately 1860-1983.

Biographical Note

Alice Estelle Manning Whipple (1925-2018) was born on November 4, 1925 in Shelley, Idaho to Alpha Horatio and Mary Muhlfeit Manning. She grew up in Idaho and Utah, graduating from Ogden High School. She married Albert Jay Whipple; together, they had six children. Alice was a poet and member of the Utah Poetry Society. A member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, Whipple served as a music director and conductor for various church groups. Alice Estelle Manning Whipple died on November 27, 2018.
