Scope and Contents

The Sandra C. Taylor photograph collection contains 326 images collected and created by Taylor through the course of her academic research and her travels. Folders 1-3 contain copywork collected or created by Taylor for her book Jewel of the Desert: Japanese American Internment at Topaz (1993). Much of this material was created by the United States government's War Relocation Authority Board and most were produced from material held at other institutions, primarily the Utah State Historical Society. Folders 4-5 includes copy slides and photographs taken by Taylor of art and photographs in other collections.

Folders 6-8 contain photographs taken by Sandra Taylor of events that she attended and documented, including a reunion of former incarcerees at Topaz in 1983.

Folders 9-13 contain slides and black-and-white and color prints that were primarily created by Taylor on trips to Vietnam while conducting research for her book Vietnamese Women at War: Fighting for Ho Chi Minh and the Revolution (1999).

Biographical Note

Sandra Carol Taylor (1936-2014) was born on 1936 July 31 in Sacramento California to Carol Clark and Ruel J. Taylor. She received a BA from Stanford University (1958) and a MA (1962) and PhD (1966) from the University of Colorado. From 1966 to 2001,Taylor worked as a professor in the history department at the University of Utah. Her areas of research included: the forced removal of Japanese Americans to American concentration camps; the experience of women during the Vietnam War; and diplomatic history, particularly during the Cold War. Taylor wrote many articles and books; notable titles include: Jewel of the Desert: Japanese American Internment at Topaz (1993) and Vietnamese Women at War: Fighting for Ho Chi Minh and the Revolution (1999).

Taylor enjoyed traveling for both personal enrichment and research. Places she traveled to included: India and Pakistan; Vietnam; and the Arctic Circle. Before retiring in 2001, she worked as a Fulbright Professor in Moscow, Russia, teaching the history of the Cold War. After retirement, Taylor enjoyed hiking, skiing, backpacking, scuba diving, and gardening. Sandra C. Taylor died on 2014 May 3 in Salt Lake City, Utah.
