The images in this collection document the engineering efforts of the U.S. army towards controlling malaria epidemics throughout the Pacific theater during World War II. Images specifically focus on the island of Luzon in the Philippines. Also included is an image of an unidentified group of officers.

Biographical / Historical
Arden R. Gaufin (1911-1997) served in the U.S. Army Medical Corps during World War II, and was stationed in the South Pacific from 1943 to 1945. He became a biology teacher, and was a professor at the University of Utah and at the University of Montana Biological Station. He served on the Public Health Service National Advisory Council to establish water pollution control standards.
