Scope and Contents

The Dean L. May papers (1848-2003) consist of materials relating to May's teaching and writing careers. Includes correspondence, diaries, pamphlets, reports, minutes, legal papers, news articles, notes, syllabi, maps, coding papers relating to demography studies, research materials, and scripts for a television series titled "A Peoples' History of Utah" (1978-1980). Includes a paper given at a meeting of the Mormon History Association in 1975 titled "The Mormon Community in Historical Perspective."

Abstract

The Dean L. May papers (1848-2003) consist of materials relating to May's teaching and writing careers. Included are writings, correspondence, diaries, pamphlets, reports, minutes, legal papers, news articles, notes, syllabi, maps, and coding papers related to demography studies, among other papers. Dean L. May was a professor of history at the University of Utah. His studies and teaching and writing interests centered around the social history of the United States, the American West in particular.

Boxes 1-3 were donated by Dean L. May in 1994.

Boxes 4-104 were donated by Cheryll May in 2003.

Boxes 105-108 were donated by Cheryll May in 2003.

Separated Materials

Photographs and audio-visual materials were transferred to the Multimedia Division of Special Collections (P0553 and A0766).
