Historical Note
The Growers' Market Company was founded in 1919 in Salt Lake City, Utah as a central wholesale and retrial produce market for farmers. It consisted of a permanent structure built at the former Kendall Square at 440 South West Temple. The Growers’ Market was owned by an association of Utah farmers. It replaced an earlier company called the Growers’ Exchange, which had been located at 200 West, between South Temple and First Avenue. The company was moved to provide easier access to transportation, particularly railroads: a rail spur was constructed parallel to the Market to allow easy shipping of produce outside Salt Lake City and Utah.
In the 1920s and 1930s, the Growers’ Market Company purchased many properties in Salt Lake City. It built warehouses and leased space to produce distributors and other businesses. After World War II, the infrastructure of produce growth and distribution began to shift from individual farmers and local businesses towards large agribusiness and national corporations. In the 1960s and 1970s, many of the structures that made up the Growers’ Market were torn down and replaced with other businesses. In 1993, the company changed its name to GMX Corporation.
