Biographical Sketch

Neil Astle was born on 14 June 1933 in Salt Lake City, Utah. He graduated from Granite High School in 1951 where he was an all-state athlete in both basketball and baseball. In 1954 he married Claudia Pomeroy, but they were later divorced in 1978. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1955 and a Bachelor of Architecture degree in 1958 from the University of Utah. Later he earned a Masters of Architecture in 1959 at MIT. He founded Astle/Ericson and Associates with partner Ronald G. Ericson. The firm produced 30 years of award-winning, quality architecture throughout the West and Midwest with offices in both Salt Lake City and Omaha, Nebraska. Astle was also a professor of architecture at Rhode Island School of Design and the University of Nebraska. In 1983 the American Institute of Architecture (AIA) advanced him to its highest rank, Fellow (FAIA). In 1999, the Utah Society of the AIA presented Astle with the Lifetime Achievement Award. He was the first Utah recipient of this prestigious award. Neil L. Astle died on 13 March 2000 in Salt Lake City.
