Herbert E. Gregory photograph collection
Collection
Identifier: P0013
Scope and Contents
The collection consists of fourteen books of photographs and two boxes of negatives on the geology of southern Utah and northern Arizona, Nevada and eastern California. They are taken over the period 1900-1944. Also featured are the Navajo and Hopi Indians and one book on the Indians and geology of Peru, South America; as well as the geology of New Zealand, Tahiti, Australia and Hawaii.
The books are arranged by expedition in chronological order, beginning with 1900. Some photographs were taken at later dates and placed anachronistically with the relevant subject matter. Such photographs are found on the back side of the pages.
Several numbering systems have been used to organize the photographs; in this register the photographs are consecutively numbered as they appear in the books, 1-3288 (some number are used twice and some are skipped, so the number does not accurately reflect the number of items in the collection). Some photographs also have a "G" number which might refer to a Gregory collection. Others also have a USGS number designating those possibly used in a Geological Survey bulletin. Another numbering is preceded with N.M., a New Mexico collection, or so designated. Not all are Gregory photographs; other photographers were with him on most trips. In this register photographers are noted, but not continuously.
In some cases numbers occur twice, (560-569, for example, repeat, referencing two different sets of photographs). To differentiate the two sets the second set has an "a" following the number. In the case of loose original photographs stored in Box 9, (these are individual photographs with separate identification, but in the overall numbering sequence were taken to be missing) a lower case letter follows the last number used. In one instance this alternative numbering goes to e.
The captions that accompany the photographs vary from simple name identification to explanations of the faults, stratification and varieties of sandstone, limestone, etc. This register is primarily intended as a guide. Some captions are copied verbatim, while the lengthier ones give the subject, location, date and photographer. The books have several names for rocks; generally names are copied as found in the books.
Many photographs are missing, although their captions and numbers remain. Some are loose photographs found in Box 9. These have been cross-referenced when possible. Missing photographs are noted. Also, other photographs of a later period which were not mounted and many duplicates are in Box 9, "Miscellaneous Photographs." A large number of these are duplicates of the photographs in the books and are labeled as such.
The negatives in Boxes 10 and 11 are numbered according to the book and page in which the photograph appears. About one third of the collection has corresponding negatives.
The following is a brief description of the book condition and contents. Photographs are listed by number and accompanied with the caption in the inventory section.
Book Summaries:
Book 1. Book Condition: Poor. The binding is completely gone, and the pages are stored in a flat box. The book documents a trip from Flagstaff, Arizona to Milford, Utah, May-July 1900. The pictures, however, include the Arkansas River Great Gorge and Hogback Mountain near Colorado Springs. The book contains rare photographs of the Hopi Tribes' snake dance ceremony and the consequent, and rarely photographed, act of priest purification. Other pictures include the Grand Canyon, known then as the Colorado Canyon, a petrified forest, the Kaibab Plateau, the San Francisco Mountains, and a number of photographs documenting lava flows in that region. Later photographs are found on the back of some pages. There is an explanatory note with photograph credits on the first page and a map of Arizona with the trip drawn in black ink. Negatives for pages 54-72 are in Box 10, Fd 1.
Book 2. Book Condition: Good. The binding is loose, but intact. The subject matter is largely geologic formations in the north and northeast Arizona and southern Utah. Areas included are Canyon Bonito, Fort Defiance, Buells Park, Beautiful Valley, Ganado, Sunrise Springs, Biddenoche, Lucasaca Spring, Twin Buttes, Big Burro Springs, Leupp, Tuba (Arizona), Canyon de Chelly, Goodridge, Utah, Bluff, Utah, and the Grand Falls of the Little Colorado. Because of the amount of technical data in the captions, the captions are abbreviated in the register, signifying subject and location. Negatives: Box 10, Fd 2, 3.

Gregory, Herbert Ernest, 1869-1952--Geologist.
He was born in Middleville, Michigan, October 15, 1869. He was the son of George and Jane (Bross) Gregory. He graduated with an A. B. degree from Yale University in 1896, and with a Ph.D. in 1899. He married Edna Earle Hope of Charleston, South Carolina, June 30, 1908.
He was an assistant in biology at Yale, 1896-98; instructor in physical geography, 1898-1901; assistant professor in physiography, 1901-1914; Silliman professor, geology, 1904-1936; professor emeritus since 1936, Yale; also director Bermoce P. Bishop Museum, 1919-36. He was a Geologist for the U.S. Geological Survey, Regent at the University of Hawaii, Chairman for the Committee on Pacific Investigations National Research Council, and Fellow of the Geological Society of America, member of the Association of American Geographers, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, American Philosophical Society, and author of various papers on geology in government and scientific publications.
His address at the time of the above was: Bishop Museum, Honolulu, T.H. He died January 23, 1952, and was buried at Honolulu, Hawaii.

From the editor:
Dr. Herbert E. Gregory has been coming to this region nearly every year since 1900 to spend several months in southern Utah's scenic wonderlands, trying to piece together the story of the ancient past.
During this period of years Dr. Gregory has become intimately acquainted with this region. He visited it first on foot or horseback with native Indians as guides. Now he flies over it in grand airplanes and photographs in a few minutes areas that required days or weeks to even reach some forty years ago.
