Historical Note
The Woman's Auxiliary to the American Medical Association was organized in St. Louis, Missouri, May 26, 1922. It was the logical outgrowth of the state and county auxiliaries that were already in existence in Minnesota, Oklahoma, South Dakota and Texas. Maine and Montana had organized but had not been active. The idea of a National Auxiliary originated with the Woman's Auxiliary to the State Medical Association of Texas. Mrs. Samuel Clark Red, President of the Auxiliary, with the assistance of Dr. Edward H. Gary of Dallas, introduced a resolution that was adopted, and the Woman's Auxiliary to the American Medical Association was organized.
Each state was contacted regarding the Auxiliary, and the Woman's Auxiliary to the Utah Medical Association was organized in Salt Lake City in September 1922. By June of 1923, ten states were reported organized and eight more states in the process of organization. Mrs. E.D. Hammond served as President of the Utah Auxiliary from 1923-1933. At the Utah House of Delegates in April 1993, it was voted upon to change the name of the Utah Medical Association Auxiliary to the Utah Medical Association Alliance. In June of 1993 at the National House of Delegates in Chicago, the national organization name was changed from the American Medical Association Auxiliary to the American Medical Association Alliance.
The objectives of the Utah Medical Association Alliance is to assist in those programs of the American Medical Association that improved the health and quality of life for all people; to promote health education; to encourage participation of volunteers in activities that meet health needs.
