Scope and Contents
This collection contains John W. Dawson's "The case of the Santa Maria: the Ethics of Revolutionaries." 71 pp. typescript. Dissatisfied with media portrayals of events onboard the Santa Maria, Dawson wrote the following as a preface to this article:
On examination of the press of the world after the act of seizure of the Santa Maria, I have come to the conclusion that never has a story been so poorly reported, so mistakenly based on preconceived political beliefs and notions that have nothing to do with the morality and violence of the action. The censorship on the boat, imposed by guns, was so tight that only misleading statements could be sent out. Even when off Recife, the reporters were not allowed on and those who knew this, struggled to get true reports over to them. This has conveyed a completely false picture of a gang of revolutionaries or pistoleers [sic] to the world...I want to expose these so-called revolutionaries for the petty usurpers of power that they are, and for their complete obliviousness and disregard for the welfare of those they supposedly risked their lives to liberate.
