James Sweeney oral history

 Collection — Box: 1
Identifier: ACCN 1869

Scope and Contents

This collection consists of the oral history of James Sweeney (b. 1838), narrated to J. Ross Mackenzie in the early part of the twentieth century. Sweeney was, by turns, a soldier in the 5th Infantry from 1855 to 1860, a gold miner from Yellowstone to Nevada, a freight runner between Cheyenne and Nebraska, and finally, a farmer in North Dakota. The history is a story of adventure and the sort of hard toil that legends were made of. It includes a transcript and a photocopy of the article written from the history for The Washington Historical Quarterly, 1921.
