Scope and Contents
The James F. Milligan diaries (1846-1854) consist of two volumes written by Milligan during two episodes of a full and remarkable life. The research for the book comes mostly from the 1846-1854 diaries contained in this collection. The first diary is his account of life in 1846 aboard the Albany, a U.S. sloop of war, while the second is concerned with Milligan's experiences during Frèmont's fifth expedition in 1854.

Biographical Note
James F. Milligan (1829-1899) was in turn, a Navy midshipman, a Confederate signalman, a newspaper correspondent, a member of Charles Frèmont's 1854 expedition, and various other things. His story has been published in the book James F. Milligan, His Journal of Frèmont's Fifth Expedition 1853-1854; His Adventurous Life on Land and Sea, by Mark J. Stegmaier and David H. Miller.
