The Martin Tolchin papers consist of 16 scrapbooks containing newspaper articles written by Tolchin between 1955 and 1989, and an addendum includes newspaper clippings of articles written between 1979 and 1991. Also included are press passes and pamphlets.

Biographical / Historical

Martin Tolchin was born 20 September 1928 in Brooklyn, NY. He attended the University of Utah from 1947 to 1949, then obtained an LL.B. from New York Law School in 1951. After serving with the U. S. Army (1951-1953) Tolchin returned to New York and went to work as a copy boy for the New York Times. He remained with the Times, first as a reporter, then as bureau chief, for 40 years. His book, Buying into America: How Foreign Money Is Changing the Face of the Nation was honored by Business Week in 1988. In 1994 Tolchin founded The Hill, a weekly newspaper about the United States Congress, and later helped launch POLITICO. Tolchin married Susan Jane Goldsmith in 1965, and the Tolchins have written several books together.
