Walker House guest register
Collection — Oversize Box: 1
Identifier: ACCN 1616
Scope and Contents
The Walker House guest register (1875) contains signatures of the hotel's guests between July 13, 1875 and December 30, 1875. Its blotter pages are filled with local Salt Lake City advertisements for everything from dentists and dry goods to stoves and "segars." President Ulysses S. Grant visited Salt Lake City in October of this year as part of a larger trip to the Rocky Mountains. He stayed at the Walker House during his three day visit. Grant signed the register on October 3, 1875, the day he and his party arrived in the valley. Citizens hoped his visit would increase his personal interest in the Territory as well as the "welfare, progress and prosperity of her citizens." (The Deseret News, 5 October 1875, p. 2) The Walker House was a relatively new addition to the downtown Salt Lake City area at this time, having been built in 1872. It was torn down shortly after the turn of the century and replaced by the David Keith Building, located at 248 S. Main Street.
