Scope and Contents

The Hays Gorey papers (1950-1990) contain research, correspondence, newspaper clippings, and certificates pertaining to Gorey's work as a journalist. Research and information gathered by Gorey on the Kennedy family are contained in box 1. Research, articles, and other informational sources concerning Robert F. Kennedy and his wife Ethel Kennedy are housed in boxes 2-4. Articles, correspondence, and research concerning Robert F. Kennedy's political campaigns are in boxes 5-6. Articles, correspondence, and research regarding Edward Kennedy and the Chappaquiddick incident are contained in boxes 7-8. Research, articles, and correspondence regarding Watergate are housed in boxes 9-11. Articles, research, and correspondence concerning Hubert H. Humphrey are in boxes 12-13. Business correspondence is contained in boxes 14-16. Personal correspondence is housed in box 17. Research on other political figures and events is in boxes 18-24. Notebooks containing Gorey's handwritten research of various people are contained in box 25. Correspondence with Time and articles by Hays Gorey for Time and other magazines are housed in box 26. Miscellaneous material is in box 27. Some original correspondence has been removed from the collection and replaced with photocopies. The original correspondence is available with the approval of the Manuscripts Division Head.

Biographical Note

Hays Gorey was a graduate of the University of Utah. He began his career as a journalist by serving as the editor of the University of Utah Chronicle. He moved on to be the City Editor and News Editor for the Salt Lake Tribune. He was also the Boston Bureau Chief, National Political Correspondent, and Washington Correspondent for Time beginning in 1965. He has written four books, Nader and the Power of Everyman (1975), Pepper, Eyewitness to a Century (1987), Robert Kennedy, The Last Campaign (1993), and Mo-A Woman's View of Watergate (1975). He is the co-founder of the Robert F. Kennedy Journalism Awards.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

Boxes 1-27 were donated in 1996 and 1997. Cartons 28-29 were donated in 1998.

Separated Materials

Photographs were transferred to the Multimedia Divison of Special Collections (P0717).
