Scope and Contents

The Justin Call Stewart papers (1901-2009) are separated into two parts, professional materials and personal materials. His professional materials include materials pertaining to various seniors' organizations that he was involved with including the following: Utah State Coalition of Senior Citizens, Utah Legal Services, Utah Senior Political Action Committee, the Health Maintenance Organization, and the Consumer Producer Cooperative Movement. His personal materials include biographical materials, family correspondence, receipts, financial materials, genealogical materials of the Wightman, Ross, Call, and Stewart families, and materials pertaining to the Stewart Family Trust. Within the categories, materials are organized chronologically.

Biographical Note

Justin Call Stewart (1912-1992) was born in Provo, Utah to Esther Call and John Riggs Stewart. He was educated in Salt Lake, graduating from the University of Utah in 1933. He received his M.A. from Teacher's College in Columbia, New York, in 1935. He married Martha Ross that same year and the couple subsequently had four children.

During his career, he was elected to the Utah House of Representatives in 1949. Stewart earned a law degree from the University of Utah and was admitted to the Utah State Bar in 1960. As a Utah attorney, Stewart was active in organizations for senior citizens. From 1979 to 1983 he served as a volunteer lawyer for the Senior Law Center of the Utah Legal Service Corporation. He served as Speaker of the House in the Utah Seniors' Legislature from 1982 to 1984. He also was the founder and president of the nonpartisan Utah Seniors Political Action Committee.

The Stewart Family also owned a large amount of land in Provo Canyon that largely contributed to the Stewart Family Trust. A portion of the land was sold to Robert Redford in the 1960s which now forms the Sundance Corporation. Justin Stewart took part in much of the legal documentation for the sale, development, and management of the land.

Justin Stewart died on June 14, 1992.

Abstract

The Justin Call Stewart papers (1901-2009) consist of professional materials pertaining to various organizations including the Utah State Coalition of Senior Citizens, Utah Legal Services, Utah Senior Political Action Committee, the Health Maintenance Organization, and the Consumer Producer Cooperative Movement. The collection also contains personal materials, includes biographical materials, family correspondence, receipts, finances, and genealogical materials. Stewart was elected to the Utah House of Representatives in 1949. Stewart was also active in numerous organizations especially those for senior citizens

Immediate Source of Acquisition

Boxes 2-4,6-8, 11-12, and 16 were donated by Martha Stewart in 1994 (4.5 linear feet).

Box 17 was donated by Martha Stewart in 2004 (0.5 linear feet).

Boxes 1, 5, 9, 10 13-15, and 18-23 were donated by Polly Stewart in 2010 (5.75 linear feet).

Boxes 24-49 were donated by Heather Stewart Dorrell in 2014 (10.5 linear feet).

Separated Materials

Photographs were transferred to the Multimedia Division of Special Collections (P01128).
