Scope and Contents
The Amos Davis account book (1839-1842) consists of a photocopy and transcription of account book, showing the transactions that took place in Amos Davis' store in Commerce (later Nauvoo), Illinois.
The following people can be found in the account ledger: Porter Rockwell, Joseph Smith, Jr., Hyrum Smith, Don Carlos Smith, Samuel Smith, Newell Knight, James Mulholland, Hiram Kimball, Sidney Rigdon, and William and Wilson Law. The record book was kept by two unknown individuals. The number in the front of an entry is the account number of that person. The account numbers change at times and at other times they are not use. Many abbreviations are used through the book, some include: Cr: Credit, Dr: Draft, Pd: Paid, Bd: Bed or Board, and Hdkf: Handkerchief.

Biographical Sketch
Amos Davis was born on 20 September 1813 at Hopkinton, Rockingham County, New Hampshire. He moved to Commerce, Illinois, in 1836. He married Mary Jane Scott on 1 January 1837. The Davis store and hotel was in operation when the LDS Saints arrived in the area. Davis was baptized a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in April 1840.
