Scope and Contents

The William J. Roosen skiing collection (1969-1991) has been divided into four categories. The first category includes materials stemming from Roosen's teaching of a skiing history class and includes bibliographic resources, exams, student reports, and correspondence. The second contains pamphlets, brochures, and news clippings with information on numerous ski resorts in North America, Europe, and Australia. The third contains articles and books on various aspects of skiing. The last contains issues of "Alta Powder News" (Alta, Utah) from 1969-1991. For the most part, the original folder titles and arrangement has followed Roosen's original arrangement.

Biographical / Historical

William J. Roosen, a 1962 graduate of Illinois College, began his professional career at Northern Arizona University (NAU) in 1967 after completing his Ph.D. in European history at the University of Southern California. Roosen was a scholar of early modern diplomacy, and published numerous articles and two books resulting from his research in this area. Roosen served as the president of the Western Society for French History at NAU in 1973-1974, and edited that group's Proceedings from 1985 to 1988. Roosen died in 1993.

Abstract

The William J. Roosen skiing collection (1969-1991) includes bibliographies, examinations, reports, and correspondence stemming from Roosen's teaching of a ski history class; pamphlets and clippings on ski resorts; articles and books on various aspects of skiing; copies of the "Alta Powder News" (1967-1991). Roosen was a professor of history at Northern Arizona University where he taught a class in ski history.
