Scope and Contents

The Wilford Ence family papers (1840-1933) consists of an original autobiography and family record written by Gottlieb Ence, as well as an autobiography by George J. Ramsey. Three newspaper articles giving an account of Wilford Ence's donation of a "motel," built by his father, to the Pioneer Trail State Park are also included. The autobiography of Gottlieb Ence covers his early life in Switzerland, his joining the Mormon Church and emigrating to Utah, and his experiences in Salt Lake City during the 1860s. It also discusses his marriages to Elizabeth (1866) and Caroline (1872), his mission to Switzerland and Germany, his experience with the United Order in Richfield, and his imprisonment for polygamy. Included in the collection is a handwritten autobiography by George J. Ramsey, 1862-1932, describes his boyhood in Indiana and Illinois, later in Utah after joining the Mormon Church.

Biographical Sketch

Gottlieb Ence was born on 26 August 1840 in Htobel by Meltlen Canton Thurgan, Switzerland. He joined the LDS Church and emigrated to Utah in 1860. He married Elizabeth James in 1866. He married Elizabeth's sister, Caroline, in 1872. George J. Ramsey was born in 1862 in Noblesville, Indiana. He joined the LDS Church in 1884 emigrated to Utah that same year.

Wilford Ence (b. 1883) was the son of Gottlieb and Caroline Ence. George J. Ramsey was the father of Caroline Ence. Both Gottlieb and George were LDS converts.
