Sun Valley Postcards, 1944
Scope and Contents
The Shirley Pagter Rothstein photograph collection consists of 1 box containing 18 black-and-white photographs and postcards and 1 program related to skiing and the U.S. Naval Convalescent Hospital where Shirley Rothstein worked, circa mid-1944-1945, as a member of the United States Naval Reserve branch known was WAVES, or Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service. Included is a photo of Shirley Rothstein in her U.S. Navy uniform at a typewriter in the U. S. Naval Convalescent Hospital in 1945,as well as images and program for the “First Annual U. S. Naval Convalescent Hospital Ski Carnival, March 18, 1945, U. S. Naval Convalescent Hospital, Sun Valley, Idaho”, and photo postcards of Sun Valley.
The program includes placing and scores for the contestants. There are photos of Alf and Corey Engen competing in the Ski Jumping event, as well as other unidentified participants. The photographer is unnamed; the images may have been created or collected by Shirley Rothstein.
The black-and-white photograph postcards were presumably collected by Shirley Pagter Rothstein. One is a view of the Naval Hospital and includes a message written by Shirley to her family describing the grounds. The other postcards are blank and contain images of dog sledders and skiers,
