The Shirley Pagter Rothstein photograph collection consists of 1 box containing 18 black-and-white photographs and postcards and 1 program related to skiing and the U.S. Naval Convalescent Hospital where Shirley Rothstein worked, circa mid-1944-1945, as a member of the United States Naval Reserve branch known was WAVES, or Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service. Included is a photo of Shirley Rothstein in her U.S. Navy uniform at a typewriter in the U. S. Naval Convalescent Hospital in 1945,as well as images and program for the “First Annual U. S. Naval Convalescent Hospital Ski Carnival, March 18, 1945, U. S. Naval Convalescent Hospital, Sun Valley, Idaho”, and photo postcards of Sun Valley.

The program includes placing and scores for the contestants. It lists competitors and events: Alf and Corey Engen, Floyd Johnson, Jerry Hyatt, Alf Engen, Warren Brown Jr., Muddy Numbers, Jack Reddish, Corey Engen and Sam Winn in the Men’s Open Division Jumping Event; Floyd Johnson, Bryon Todd, Terry Hyatt, Ted Deboer, Alf Engen, Harry Franklin, Sepp Benedikter, Dan Defenbacher, Warren Brown Jr., Ryden Skinner, Muddy Numbers, Jack Reddish, Corey Engen in the Men’s Open Division Downhill Race; Jack Strand, Ralph Onsrud, Virgil Guseila, James Beyer, Clair Kolar, S. There are photos of Alf and Corey Engen competing in the Ski Jumping event, as well as other unidentified participants. The photographer is unnamed; the images may have been created or collected by Shirley Rothstein.

The black-and-white photograph postcards were presumably collected by Shirley Pagter Rothstein. One is a view of the Naval Hospital and includes a message written by Shirley to her family describing the grounds. The other postcards are blank and contain images of dog sledders and skiers,

Biographical / Historical

Shirley Pagter Rothstein served in the women's branch of the United States Naval Reserve during World War II. The Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Servies, or WAVES, was established on July 21, 1942. Rothstein worked at the at the United States Navy Convalescent Hospital in Sun Valley, Idaho. On July 1, 1943, the United States Navy commissioned the Navy Convalescent Hospital at the site of the Challenger Inn in Sun Valley, a hotel leased from the Union Pacific Railroad. The hospital cared for patients whose acute injuries and illnesses had passed, but who needed longer term physical or psychological care and rehabilitation. In addition to physical therapy, the hospital offered numerous recreational activities, including golf, tennis, swimming, and ski tournaments. The United States Navy Convalescent Hospital closed in January 1946, having treated 6,578 Navy and Marine service members.
