Scope and Contents

This photograph collection reflects aspects of Buchanan's personal life and also his study and interest in Scotland and the fields of education and history. The Buchanan collection contains images of Buchanan's ancestors, family and friends, including photographs of many of the L.D.S.(Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints) missionaries with whom Buchanan served in the British Mission during the early 1950s. A strong Scottish component is found in the collection including images from Buchanan's childhood in Ayrshire, Scottish royalty, scenery, and Scottish cultural events and gatherings in Utah. Folders 10-13 contain images related to Buchanan's career in, and study of education. Included are of photographs of the Eskdale Commune in the early 1970s, and superintendents and classroom scenes from Buchanan's book, Culture Clash and Accommodation: Public Schooling in Salt Lake City, 1890-1994.
