Kallerud was born in Sun Valley, Idaho and was on the C team and the development team for the United States Ski team from 1976 to 1979. She skied for the University of Utah Ski team from 1981 to 1982. She earned her bachelor's degree in English and her secondary teaching certificate from the University of Utah in 1984.
