Abstract The Thorn L. Mayes Sr. papers (1920s-1980s) consist of correspondence, maps, brochures, pamphlets, articles, field books, bulletins, and other materials concerning the exploration of canyon country in Utah and Arizona. A graduate of the University of California (1927), Thorn L. Mayes Sr. (1903-1987) was an electrical engineer who conducted geologic explorations of various areas in the western United States, such as Monument Valley.

Abstract The James F. Milligan diaries (1846-1854) consist of two volumes written by Milligan. The first is his account of life aboard the Albany, a U.S. sloop of war, while the second concerns his experiences during Fremont's fifth expedition in 1854. James F. Milligan was a Navy midshipman, a Confederate signalman, a newspaper correspondent, and a member of Charles Frémont's 1854 expedition.
