She received officer and communications training in Massachusetts before being sent to San Francisco, where she decoded messages. Bowen was born on 15 September 1924 in Cokeville, Wyoming. He recalls his childhood and schooling, Marine boot camp in San Diego (1943), and further training at Camp Elliott. He was shipped to New Caledonia (New Hebrides) as part of the 1st Marine Division, 1st Marine Regiment, 2nd Battalion, E Company.
