Biographical / Historical

Reverend Paul Jones (1880-1941) was the Episcopal Bishop of Utah from 1916 to 1918. Jones graduated from the Episcopal Divinity School in Cambridge, Massachusetts, in 1906. Jones was ordained an archdeacon in 1913 and was chosen to succeed Bishop Franklin Spencer Spalding after his death in 1914. Jones’ outspoken opposition the World War I led him to be brought before a special committee of the House of Bishops to determine whether or not he should keep his post. Jones resigned effective April 11, 1918. After that, he worked as a missionary in Brownville Junction, Maine. In 1921, Jones helped the Fellowship of Reconciliation become international in 1919, and worked as the secretary for a decade. In 1929, Reverend Paul Jones became chaplain and assistant professor of religion at Antioch College in Yellow Springs, Ohio, where he passed away in 1941 at the age of 60.
