Biographical / Historical

The Avenues is a Salt Lake City neighborhood bordered by the foothills of the Wasatch Mountains to its north and east and by South Temple Street to its south. Surveyed in the 1850s, the neighborhood was the first section of Salt Lake City to deviate from the original grid plan of ten acre blocks. Blocks were smaller (2.5 acres) and streets were narrower. Because this survey pattern violated the law, the territorial legislature passed a new survey ordinance on January 20, 1860. The streets were initially named, but by 1885 the east-west streets were given numerical names while the north-south streets were given alphabetical names. The Hillcrest Apartments was built in 1916 and has 4 stories with 111 units. Source: Haglund, K. and P. Notarianni. The Avenues of Salt Lake City. (1980). The Utah State Historical Society.
