The Sho and Toshi Yamada Higashi digital photograph collection consists of 3 digital reproductions of black-and-white photographs depicting Sho Higashi and other Japanese American World War II veterans. Biographical / Historical

The Sho and Toshi Yamada Higashi digital photograph collection consists of photographs of Sho Higashi and brothers during their service in the United States army during World War II. Sho Higashi was born on August 13, 1917 in Wenatchee, Washington to Yuki Imafuku and Matsutaro Higashi. He was raised in Pocatello, Idaho. When the United States entered World War II, the Higashi family was living in Seattle, Washington. They were imprisoned in Minidoka War Relocation Center in Idaho. Sho Higashi joined the United States Army and fought in World War II; during this time, he was exposed to mustard gas through military experimentation (World War II Secret Mustard Gas Testing Database, NPR, November 3, 2015). Toshiko "Toshi" Yamada was born on February 26, 1924 in McCammon, Idaho to Isotoro and Misao Yamada. She graduated from Pocatello High School in 1941. Toshiko Yamada met the Higashi family while visiting Minidoka, where they were imprisoned. Toshi Yamada and Sho Higashi married on January 28, 1950; together, they had three children. Sho Higashi died on May 6, 1992. Toshi Higashi died on July 13, 2016.
