Scope and Contents

The Grant L. and Mary Merrell Valentine photograph collection consists of 2 boxes. Box 1 contains 41 black-and-white and color photographs and negatives of Grant and Mary Valentine, their family, friends, and travels, as well as photographs of Grant Valentine's military service. Box 2 contains oversized photographs of an 8th grade graduation at Box Elder Junior High School, a portrait of the valentine family, and group portrait's of Grant Valentine's military unit. The photographs date from 1935 to 2005.

Biographical Note

Grant Lovegreen Valentine was born on September 11, 1912 in Brigham City, Utah, to Rachel Hansen and Joseph W. Valentine. He attended public school, where he met his future wife, Mary Merrell (born March 7, 1912), daughter of Mary Rees and Charles William Merrell. The couple married on September 1, 1933 when Grant was attending the University of Utah. Valentine was a member of the Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC). His unit was activated during World War I and he was shipped to the Pacific Theater where he served until 1945. Valentine was discharged with the rank Lt. Colonel and served in the Army Reserve until 1972.

Valentine received a Master's degree in Social Work from the University of Utah in 1952. He worked as a social worker and teacher prior to establishing a business in the oil and gas field. Grant and Mary were the parents of two daughters, Nancy and Christina. They enjoyed traveling, especially on ocean freighters. In later life, the couple divided their time between Salt Lake City and Laguna Beach, California, where they were active in the Laguna Beach Lawn Bowling Club. Mary Valentine died in Salt Lake City in 2002. Grant Valentine died in Laguna Beach in 2005.

Abstract

Grant L. Valentine (1912-2005) was a World War II veteran, social worker, and educator who formed a business in the oil and gas field. With his wife, Mary Merrell Valentine (1912-2002), Valentine traveled globally. This collection contains photographs of the Valentine family, friends, travels, and military service.
