Scope and Contents
The Word War I Parade photograph collection consists of 1 box containing 28 black-and-white photograph prints depicting the November 11, 1918 parade and celebration of Armistice Day in downtown Salt Lake City, Utah. The images depict people in vehicles; crowds of men, women, and children celebrating on sidewalks and in the streets; and musicians. The people hold American flags, instruments and other noise-makers, banners, and signs. A stamp on the back of the photographs reads "Sainsbury-Siddoway Photo Co. Commercial Photographers Kodak Finishing, Film, etc. Main Street Street, Salt Lake City, Wasatch."

Historical Note
World War I, known as the Great War, began on July 28, 1914 and ended on November 11, 1918. Of the 8.5 million soldiers who died in combat or from disease during the war, about 116,516 were American, and 665 were from Utah. Governor Simon Bamberger and Salt Lake City Mayor W.M. Ferry declared November 11, 1918 a legal holiday and paraded through Main Street in celebration along with thousands of people on foot and in vehicles. The impromptu parade and celebration lasted throughout the day. November 11, 1918 was originally celebrated as Armistice Day. It was declared a national holiday in 1938. In 1954, under President Dwight D. Eisenhower, the holiday was renamed to Veterans Day and expanded to honor all United States military troops.
