Scope and Contents

The Edward Harrison Snyder photograph collection consists of 2 boxes containing 28 black-and-white photograph prints. Box 1 contains images of mines and miners associated with the Snyder family companies in Utah, Idaho, and Nevada, as well as photographs of members of the Snyder family. Box 2 is oversized and consists of a photograph identified as Ralph Farrar's wedding. The collection dates from approximatley 1930 to 1990.

Biographical Note

Edward Harrison Snyder was born in Frisco, Utah on February 12, 1889 to Willard Fiske Snyder and Dora Annette Walker Snyder. Willard F. Snyder was a famous mine promoter and was active in Utah, Idaho, and Nevada areas such as Park City, Tooele, Bingham, Dugway, Eureka, Marysville, Kimberly, Frisco, Elko and Pioche. He formed the company, W. F. Snyder and Sons. E. H. Snyder gained an interest in mining and received a degree in mining engineering from the Michigan College of Mining and Technology, carrying on the family mining traditions.

The Snyder family were pioneers in many areas, particularly metallurgy. They were involved with the development of lead/zinc flotation, uranium metallurgy, perlite mining, gold extraction, manganese, and metals recycling.

Later in life, E. H. Snyder became president of Combined Metals Reduction Company in Salt Lake City, Utah. His company played a major role in revitalizing the mining town of Hailey, Idaho, Stockton, Utah, Mercur, Utah and Pioche, Nevada. In 1991 Snyder was inducted into the National Mining Hall of Fame. Edward Harrison Snyder died on December 6, 1967 at age 78.

Abstract

Edward Harrison Snyder (1889-1967) was a member of the Snyder family who promoted mines in Utah, Idaho, and Nevada and were pioneers in various areas of metallurgy. In addition to participating in the family business of W.F. Snyder and Sons, E.H. Snyder was president of the Combined Metals Reduction Company in Salt Lake City, Utah. This collection contains images of the Snyder family and of Snyder's career in mining, particularly in the area of Pioche, Nevada.
