Historical Note

Ophir, Utah is located in Tooele County, Utah, 22 miles southeast of the city of Tooele. It was established by the United States military during the 1960s as a mining camp after the discovery of silver and lead deposits. In the 1870s, additional discoveries of silver-lead ore sparked a rush in the area, and the mining town of Ophir was founded. As the resources were quickly depleted, the population of Ophir dropped by 1880. In the early 1900s, discoveries of zinc in the area once again caused the town to grow. While the town’s temporary population fluctuated with increased mining activity, the permanent population steadily decreased throughout the twentieth century after a high of 500 in 1920. In 2016, Ophir was disincorporated. As of the 2010 census, Ophir had a population of 38.
