Scope and Contents

The Joseph Severn and Marjorie Allen Jones Family photograph collection consists of 12 boxes containing 2,450 photographs and postcards documenting the Allen, Lowry, and Jones families and dating from approximately 1880 to 2000. Formats in the collection include: tin types, cabinet cards, cartes de visite, stereographs, and color and black-and-white prints.

Box 1 contains images of the Lowry and Allen family well as postcards and souvenir albums of Utah, United States, Canada and Europe. Boxes 2-3 are mostly studio photographs pr cabinet cards taken by 19th and early 20th century Utah photographers and photography studios. While some of the images are members of the Lowry and Allen families, many others are of unidentified individuals. Boxes 4-6 contain images of Joseph Severn Jones, his family, as well as the life and marriage of Joseph Severn and Marjorie Allen Jones dating from approximately 1930 to 2007. Boxes 7-12 are oversized. Boxes 7-10 contain photo albums of portraits, family photographs, and travel photographs. Boxes 11-12 contain mounted photos and other large prints.

Biographical Note

Samuel H. Allen (1862-1926) was born in Mount Pleasant, Utah, on July 15, 1862. He graduated from the University of Utah in 1881, after which he studied medicine at the College of Physicians and Surgeons in Baltimore, Maryland, graduating in 1890. Returning to Utah in 1891, Allen established a reputation as one of the foremost surgeons in the state. On June 8, 1892, Samuel Allen married Ida May Lowry (1865-1963); together, the couple had six children. In 1916, he and Dr. George W. Middleton formed a multi-specialty group practice which they named the Inter-Mountain Clinic. Samuel Allen died on August 30, 1926.

Moore Lowry Allen (1893-1952), the eldest child and only son of Samuel H. and Ida May Lowry Allen, was born in Mount Pleasant, Utah, on August 2, 1893. He followed his father into the practice of medicine, graduating with a medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania in 1924. Moore Lowry Allen married Anna Eliza Hunt (1897-1990) on June 23, 1920; together, the couple had two children. Allen practiced medicine in Pennsylvania and in Utah from 1924-1952 while teaching on the medical faculties of the University of Pennsylvania and the University of Utah, where he was appointed as the school's first professor of radiology. Moore Lowry Allen died on August 2, 1952.

Marjorie Allen (1905-2007) was born on August 26, 1905, the youngest child of Samuel H. and Ida May Lowry Allen. In her youth, Marjorie Allen enjoyed competitive running and piano playing. During World War I, when she was a teenager, she knit scarves and folded bandages for the Red Cross. She studied at the University of Utah, graduating in 1928, after which she became an elementary school teacher in the Salt Lake City School District. On June 23, 1931, she married Joseph Severn Jones; together, the couple had three children. Joseph Severn Jones (1905-1988) was born in Montpelier, Idaho, on March 23, 1905 to John Joseph and Elizabeth Severn Jones. He graduated from the University of Utah in 1927, after which he entered law school and received his J.D. degree from the University of Chicago Law School in 1930. Jones joined the Jones, Waldo, Holbrook and McDonough law firm in 1932 and retired as a senior partner in 1972. During World War II, Jones served in the United States Navy, obtaining the rank of Lieutenant Commander. In addition to his practice of law, Jones served on the board of directors of Walker Bank and Trust Company and at the Mountain Fuel Supply Company. Together, Marjorie and Joseph Jones were active members of the Alta Club, the Ensign Club, and the Salt Lake Country Club. Marjorie Allen Jones was also active in the Pi Beta Phi sorority, the Relief Society, Daughters of Utah Pioneers, and the Utah Symphony Guild. Joseph Severn Jones died on January 3, 1988. Marjorie Allen Jones died on September 30, 2007.

The collection contains photographs, albums, and postcards depicting family, friends, travel, and military, as well as studio photographs from various 19th century Utah photographers.
