Scope and Contents

The Barbara Jean Erickson Andersen photograph collection consists of 1 box containing black-and-white and color photographs documenting the life of Edith Aurora Westerlund Erickson (1909-1988). In particular, the collection contains photographs of the Westerlunds in Park City, Utah, including portraits of Westerlund Erickson's parents, John Axel and Ana Evelina Mattson Westerlund, prior to their marriage. The family photographs include pictures of outdoor recreation in Park City in the early 1920s, including skiing and sleighing. These images date from approximatley 1900 to 1925; many include captions provided by Edith Westerlund Erickson to Barbara Jean Andersen prior to Edith's 1988 death. The collection also includes color photographs of Park City in 1988, documenting places and buildings significant to the Westerlund family.

Biographical Note

Barbara Jean Erikson graduated from the University of Utah with a BS in elementary education in 1947. She married Phil L. Andersen in 1948. The couple had four children. Andersen returned to the University of Utah and received an MS in education in 1971.This collection contains material that Andersen collected about her stepmother, Edith Aurora Westerlund Erickson.

Edith Aurora Westerlund Erickson was born on July 3, 1909, in Park City, Utah, to John Axel and Ana Evelina Mattson Westerlund. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Edith Westerlund married Kenneth Erickson on November 3, 1940; he died in 1949. She remarried to Orlando Daniel Erickson on November 11, 1972. Westerlund Erickson had a long career in nursing: she worked as head nurse in the Infant Newborn Nursery at the LDS Hospital between 1932 and 1938; from 1941 to 1946 she supervised surgical services and worked as a nursing instructor for the Cadet Nurse Corps. She also served as a public health nurse in Iron and Weber counties; worked as a nursing supervisor for Salt Lake General Hospital; and taught nursing at Utah Technical College and for the Utah State Department of Vocational Education. She retired in 1972. Edith Westerlund Erickson died on August 3, 1988.

The collection primarily documents Westerlund Erickson's childhood in Park City, Utah, and includes photographs of her family and friends. The collection also contains photographs of places in Park City significant to the Westerlund family taken in 1988.
