Historical Note
The Dead Goat Saloon was a Salt Lake City bar and music club that opened in 1973. Located on Arrow Press Square, 165 S. West Temple, across from the former Salt Palace arena, in the 1970s and 1980s the Goat was frequented by athletes and sportswriters as well as students from the University of Utah. Around 1990, John Paul Brophy, a music reviewer for the Salt Lake Tribune, purchased an ownership stake in the bar. Partnering with Michael Ricks, Brophy developed the Dead Goat into a music venue, particularly for jazz and blues musicians. In 2003, attorney Daniel Darger purchased the business and changed its name to the Crazy Goat and shifted its focus from music to adult entertainment. In 2004, Darger and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints sued each other over Darger’s right to offer adult entertainment so close to Temple Square. While Darger won the legal battle, the Crazy Goat Saloon, formerly the Dead Goat, closed in 2007.
