Historical Note

The Utah Salt Flat are one of the largest flat areas in the world. Although the surface is not perfectly smooth, the total size makes it a popular place to set top land speed records. The first land speed record set at the Bonneville Salt Flats was in 1914 by Teddy Tetzlaff at 142.8 miles per hour. The site became an international racing destination in the 1930s, and in 1949 the annual Bonneville Speed Week event was established. Each year, Bonneville Speed Week is held in the middle of August, though environmental concerns sometimes cause the event to be canceled. All kinds of vehicles are raced at the Salt Flats, from small motorcycles to race cars, even normal cars.
