The Peter Gibbs photograph collection contains 6 items: digital scans and prints, made in 2007, of photographs taken in 1975. The images document Gibbs and other unidentified people engaging in outdoor recreation: climbing Mt. Chimborazo in Equador and El Capitain in Yosemite, Black Box of the San Rafael with Bego Gerhart (rafting), and the hut where Peter and Eric Eliason stayed in Columbia.

Biographical Note

Peter Edward Gibbs (b. 1943) was born on October 16, 1943 in Salt Lake City, Utah. He attended the University of Utah and graduated with a Doctor of Philosophy degree (PhD) in mechanical engineering in 1971. As a young man, Gibbs and his brother, Charles, developed Gibbs Ascender, the mechanical replacement for the prussik knot and an aid for climbers, spelunkers, arborists and rescue workers. An outdoor enthusiast, Gibbs has acquired vast knowledge of recreational sports and its history through his adventures in climbing, caving, sea kayaking, ski touring, and forty years of commercial river running. He is the author of Off Track In Colombia: A Tale of Action, Adventure, and Passion.
