Historical Note
DOIT (Depositors of Insured Thrifts), or Do-it, was a Utah organization formed to assist people who lost money in five local thrifts (state-level financial institutions that lacked federal insurance) that went bankrupt in the 1986. Depositors with thrifts lost over $103 million dollars in what was called Utah's worst financial disaster since the Great Depression. In 1987, over 15,000 depositors who lost money grouped together and initiated lawsuits against the state of Utah as well as banking and legal executives. Individuals named in the suit included Roy Moore, Touche Ross, Deloitte Haskins and Sells, and Larry Miller. Over years of litigation, members of DOIT were able to recoup some losses througha $44 million settlement with the state. In addition to legal aid, DOIT offered reunions, where members received and gave support, and served to disseminate information to affected individuals.
