Biographical Note
Joe Yoshio Ota (1930-2015) was born on January 13, 1930 in Loomis, California to Ryoji and Yaeno Ota. In Ota’s childhood, the family lived in Newcastle and Lincoln, California. The Ota family was imprisoned in Tule Lake War Relocation Center from 1942 to 1946. After they were released, the family moved to Utah, living first in Sandy before moving to Draper to work in farming with the Akagi family. Joe Ota graduated from Jordan High School in 1948.
On February 6, 1951, Joe Ota enlisted in the United States Army. He served in the Korean War and was honorably discharged in 1956. In 1958, he married Shigeko Yokota in Japan. The couple settled in Sandy, Utah, and had one daughter together. Ota worked for General Electric as an electrician for turbine motors. He was a member of the Japanese Church of Christ. Ota was an avid bowler and fisher. Joe Ota died on November 18, 2015.
