Biographical Note

Scott Harry Faulring (1956-2018) was born on August 11, 1956 in Niagara Falls, New York, to Richard James and Barbara Ruth Faulring. On May 27, 1978, he married Barbara Jo Sykes Faulring; together, they had four children. Faulring attended SUNY College, where he studied Accounting, before transferring to Brigham Young University (BYU), where he graduated in 1983.

Faulring joined the United States Air Force (USAF) in the 1970s and served for many years. He was stationed in the Middle East twice, once in Turkey and once in Saudi Arabia, where he managed air bases during the First Gulf War. However, his hobby and later profession began when he met a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in the service. Faulring later joined the Church and became interested in its history. Over a period of time, Faulring worked closely with BYU and became a professor of Aerospace Studies as part of BYU's Reserve Officer Training Corps (BYU ROTC).

In 1995, Faulring retired from the Air Force and began working for the Foundation for Ancient Research and Mormon Studies (FARMS). Among his projects at FARMS was the scanning of the Joseph Smith Bible Translation Manuscript, for which he worked closely with the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (RLDS, now known as Community of Christ) to allow FARMS to assist in scanning the manuscript. In 1999, Faulring was hired as a research historian for BYU's Joseph Fielding Smith Institute. While there, he helped work on the beginning phases of the Joseph Smith Papers Project. Scott H. Faulring died on June 29, 2018.
